Internal Bleaching
Did you know damaged or infected dental pulp can give the tooth a darkened or discolored appearance on the outside? Regular whitening procedures cannot treat this kind of discoloration, so our office offers internal bleaching to whiten a tooth from the inside out.
What is Internal Bleaching?
Internal bleaching typically begins with the dentist creating a small opening in the back of the tooth or removing an existing filling to access the pulp chamber. Next, they’ll remove any residual root canal filling material and thoroughly clean the pulp chamber to eliminate debris or staining agents.
A safe sodium perborate paste is placed inside the pulp chamber and sealed to prevent leakage. We may use heat, light, or a chemical catalyst to activate the bleaching agent. The tooth is then left to allow the bleaching agent to penetrate and break down the internal stains. Once the desired tooth shade is achieved, the dentist will seal the access point with a permanent filling or restoration to protect the treated tooth.
Internal Bleaching vs. Other Teeth Whitening Treatments
As the name suggests, internal bleaching is performed on the inside of the tooth. It focuses on lightening the tooth from the inside by applying the bleaching agent directly within the pulp chamber.
Standard whitening treatments, such as toothpastes, rinses, and whitening gels, only work on the outside of the tooth. These treatments focus on removing surface stains and lightening the color of the enamel.
What to Expect During Treatment
Generally, internal bleaching is not considered a painful procedure. The process is typically performed under local anesthesia, ensuring the patient remains comfortable and pain-free throughout the treatment. While some individuals may experience temporary sensitivity, internal bleaching is generally well-tolerated. Any discomfort is typically manageable with appropriate care and professional guidance.
